Climbing in the Madawaska Valley

The Madawaska Valley in central Ontario features rocky terrain characteristic of the Canadian Shield. The landscape hugs the Madawaska River and its major tributaries, including the York and Opeongo Rivers, as well as many large, scenic lakes. This region is rich in history, local culture, and outdoor adventure. It is prime cottage country and a destination for hiking, paddling, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and mountain biking.

Rock climbing has deep roots here, with the earliest known ascents dating back to the 1960s at the iconic Eagle's Nest cliffs overlooking the town of Bancroft. The area also offers some of Ontario's best winter ice climbing and has hosted several ice climbing festivals over the years.

The Madawaska Rock guidebook series aims to bring together climbing beta from across the valley, foster a cohesive approach for future development, and promote responsible climbing practices as we share these lands with local communities and fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
